27 days left – Happy Cinco de Mayo!

No rest for our warehouse warriors this Cinco de Mayo.  We have too much to get done before the big move. I met Marti Ashley, our Distribution Center Manager, and Chris Barnette (Happy birthday tomorrow, Chris!), our Order Fulfillment Supervisor, at our Coppell DC this morning to move some products around to get them prepped for the move.  Lots of rearranging and adding bin boxes to the carousels.  We want to do anything we can in advance to speed up the  loading of the products during the move.

After a morning in the DC, Marti and I went out to do some shopping.  We needed to get a lot of things for the new office area like a kitchen faucet, lamp for the lobby and trash cans for the restrooms.  We also picked out furniture for Marti’s new office.  During our shopping trip, I learned that you can purchase wagon wheels – in a variety of sizes – in Texas.  Let me know if you want me to pick some up for you while I am here.

Marti also felt that I needed some boots and a hat to turn me into a real Texan.

In the afternoon, we checked in on our crews at the new DC to see how things were progressing.  We found a pretty busy crew working on scrubbing the warehouse floors.  They have about a third of the floor completely scrubbed and clean now, and they will apply a sealant to that third tomorrow.  They are working very hard and I can see some progress, but it is taking a lot longer than I would like.  The good news is that the third that is done is the area where our conveyors and carousels will go.  That means that the installation can begin on Friday as planned.

As they clean, they are also filling some holes with an epoxy.  We have a lot of divots – and a few potholes – where the previous tenant had items affixed to the concrete.  Filling these in before we seal will give us a nice even surface.  It’s a little hard to see in this photo, but all of the little black circles are epoxy filling.

The big news of the day was the paint!  They have painted a lot of the office areas and they are looking much better.  Here is the lobby entrance area.

Here is Marti’s office with Marti sitting at the invisible desk that we ordered today.

Here is our hard-working painter in Marti’s office.

The breakroom paint looks great and will look even better once these cabinets are painted and the countertops are replaced.  As you can see, we still have a lot to get done!

We are looking forward to the paint getting finished tomorrow.  The carpet and vinyl should be installed on Wednesday.

The warehouse associates in Coppell haven’t seen this DC in over a month.  We are bringing them by for a tour on Monday, and I think they will be pleasantly surprised by how wonderful it is becoming.  It is really going to be a great environment for them.

So I survived my first week in Texas and Marti presented me with the Burkhart Distribution Center commemorative cup.  I am honored!
